Its probably a little to late for it now but in the future you could try putting fencing around your garden as they hate fences.

A 22 will have trouble taking out a hog they can take a hard hit use a bow with muzzy mx4 broadheads on  it

A shotgun will work wonders....

Only way to get rid of those critters, is a .22 rifle.

A dog may help, if you do not have your own dog, maybe a neighbor would be glad to lend you a hound for a while.  Moth balls might do the trick, not sure if that works on Ground Hogs or not.  You can always try.
