The pool store we use said to use "metal out". But before we try it I was wondering if anyone knew why we get it and how to get rid of it. Thanks

  1. I've heard lemon juice and borax, or lemon juice and salt work well, but I haven't tried either myself.  I'd think the latter would be safe to experiment with.

  2. You didn't specify what surface the pool was, but this works well on vinyl / fibergalss, and may work on concrete also:

If they are small spots you can reach, put some Vitamin C tablets in a nylon stocking (or something similar), and scrub the stain with it.  It should remove it.  (Ascorbic acid is sold in pool stores for this purpose, but it's on the expensive side - try the Vitamin C first to see if it works.)

Generally, those stains get in there from either high metal content in the fill water, or the metal can be leached out of any metal parts in the pump and filter if the water chemistry is out of balance (generally pH / alkalinity and /or water hardness being low.)
