So my mom and I have pretty much decided that she wants to homeschool me. But we have no clue of how to get started.

She is going to call the school board office in the morning to check into it. I was wondering though, can they say no to my mom homeschooling me. Also, websites that told how to get started and all the supplies we need would be a lot of help. Thanks.

  1. Go to www.about.com and go to the Homeschooling Forums. There are some wonderful people on the forum who are from LA  who homeschool. They can give your mom all the details.

ALSO...any easy way to get quick legal info is www.HSDLA.org...click on the Homeschooling tab, then select  Homeschool Laws from the drop down menu. Click on your state and the HSLDA will give you all the legal info. The website can also provide leads to groups in your state.

  2. DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL BOARD TO GET ADVICE OR PERMISSION TO HOMESCHOOL!

Public schools do not want you to be homeschooled in any way because they lose funding for you as a student and will do everything in their power to stop you. Check out this website www.hslda.org   and you can see what the laws and requirements are for your state. Every state differs. In some states you have to send in a letter stating you are homeschooling and in others you have to have them tested yearly, just depends. This site I have posted is what most homeschoolers use for advice and there is also an attorney that you can pay a small fee of about $100 a year in case the school board ever bothers you or threatens to call social services on you. I highly recommend them as will many other homeschoolers answering you!

Good luck and enjoy it, homschooling is really awesome.

  3. If you are interested in the high school program I would recommend Penn Foster. It's an excellent school. Your mom does not need to homeschool you. You do it yourself. They send you your materials and you do it at your own pace and there is no rushing. You turn in your exams by phone, mail, or through their website. Penn Foster is accredited by by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools, the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) and is licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools. I wouldn't recommend calling the school board because they are totally against the whole homeshool concept. They lose money. You can pay as low as $34 a month and you get support if you need any help. I hope I helped. Contact me if you have any more questions. ;)

  4. OK I'm in Louisiana!!! First go to hslda.org there are 2 options you can choose option 1 is to work a hs program with the state option 2 is to operate a private school! To do that you need to send a letter (I can email you a sample if you want) to Dr. Assyene. All this does is inform the school that you will be home schooled under option 1. It takes about 2 weeks to get the letter from them back. Then have your mom withdraw you from school. Do you have a curriculum chosen yet? Yes its that easy. You can email me with more questions!

  5. PennFoster homeschooling is a good school to try. I do it and I'm doing very well!
