I live in Texas, I live on 7 acres of land in an old 3 bedroom 2 bath home, with 4 kids sometimes 6 (seem to be the only person to raise brothers kids) care for lots of stray dogs and cats, have 2 horses and flock of chickens (so buying food is h**l) but what gets me is my land tax is always $1000.00 every year. I have heard you can lower your land tax but I can't seem to find out how. So I would be forever grateful to some good tips on how this can be done. Oh yeah, selling is not an option.

  1. Talk to the county tax assessor's office.

  2. You would have to file an appeal with your county's central appraisal district office.  You would have to prove that the value assigned to your property is not realistic.

Note:  Due to the lack of an income tax, Texas has very high property taxes.  There is nothing that you can do about that.
