  1. You can use a drinking straw or several for the center of the trunk.  Tape them together with floral tape, brush with egg white, and then wrap with brown fondant.  You can also make the trunk out of fondant alone, but if it's going to be very tall it's better to have something in there for strength.  Make a wider part at the top as a base to glue the leaves onto.

Make the leaves out of green fondant and dry them on flower formers or a crumpled sheet of foil that's been dusted with corn starch.  When the leaves are dry, glue them onto the top of the trunk with some more egg white.  Drying them on a former or crumpled foil will give them a more natural curve than just drying them on a flat surface.  They have to be dry before you stick them on the trunk or they will just hang down.

If the whole palm tree needs to be edible, use a pretzel rod for the center instead of drinking straws, and use meringue powder mixed with water instead of the egg whites.

  2. Color some of your fondant brown Roll  to make the trunk

Color some green.  Roll flat on a piece of wax paper and cut into palm leaf shapes.  (Look at a picture if you need to.)  At this point, you construct the tree with pieces of tooth pick.  To make the leaves stick out a bit you can prop them with dollops of decorators icing up where the branches meet the trunk.
