  1. make a mound of snow somewhere wait overnight then start to dig out the inside of the pile. to make it more sturdy take a candle and slightly melt the inside then expose it to the cold air and hopefully it will freeze.

  2. Ice isnt actually used to make an igloo. Packed snow that is firm enough it can be carved into blocks is used. It is best to work at a spot where there is already packed snow on the ground & dig down whilst building the walls up around you. As a result the bottom is stronger, & it is less work to build. All the blocks should have a inward sloping top, this is the key part of the structural integrity in the design. think of a stone arch...the weight of the top blocks pushes outward also, so if the blocks lack enough angle, it will fall apart. 15-20 degrees is about the amount of angel.

If you dont have a large area of packed snow, you can fill a wooden frame with snow & pack it down firm. If you do this, its easiest to forget the igloo & just hollow out the packed snow enough to function as a shelter(there is a special name for such a thing too but ive forgotten it).

    Good luck
