Does anyone know how to rehang the weights in an old window?

They are the old type windows that have weights in them when you open the windows.

  1. I did a search on "repair window sash weights" and got the link below.  That should be a starting point for you.


  2. Assuming the sash weights haven't fallen down inside the wall, you need to remove the pulleys from the sides of the window frame in order to remove the weight and rope from insde the wall.  

    Then remove the rope attachment from the window.  In some houses, I recall my father having to remove the window section from the window frame because the sash rope attachment point wasn't accessible from the top of the window, it was mounted into the side.  

    At this point you replace the rope, being sure to remember to thread it through the pulley, and tying it securely to the weight and the window.   If you don't have the old rope, be sure to make it long enough to close, but not so long that the weight touches the bottom of the wall pocket, or gets hung up on anything (outlet boxes, switch boxes, bracing, etc) inside the wall when the window is open.
