Does anyone know if El Rio Enchilada Seasoning packet have MSG in it?

My dad has a bout of gout within 24 hrs of eating this product, and I am trying to find the culprit.

  1. You need to check the list of ingredients very carefully. Manufacturers are using ingredients that are not pure MSG and therefore do not need to be mentioned as MSG. These ingredients have the same effect as MSG on the flavour of the product. One of the most common ones is Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein.

    Food additives that frequently contain MSG are:

    malt extract,  malt flavour,   bouillon,   stock,   natural flavouring,   natural beef or chicken flavour,   broth,   flavouring,   seasoning.

    Also it is a good ides to remember that manufacturers do not need to mention ingredients if they take up less than 5% of the product. This means that they can slip in anything undetected and not list it in the ingredients.


  2. If it says  MONOSODIUM GLUTIMATE on the package, it's in there for sure. If it doesn't say it, the answer is no.

  3. Most all food products are required to list their ingredients. You should be able to tell from there.
