Question:

Does anyone know if fish sleep?

This question bugs me like a wasp in my lemonade. Nobody knows the solution. Perhaps it is hereby officially unknown to man. Meh. Maybe I'm simply stupid....

  1. yes - if you see your fish at rest (immobile) nead the bottom of the tank then he/ she is sleeping.


  2. Yeah they do. Sometimes if you tap the tank they don't notice you, then suddenly jump and swim round. Must have been sleeping. They go kind of still and tend to go quite low or float between reeds.  

  3. It's not unknown to man.

    They do sleep, but of course can't close eyes.

    Some stop swimming and just lay, most often well hidden, some others keep swimming even when sleeping.

  4. yes they do sleep, but they keep swimming when they are a sleep.

  5. Yes but they have no eyelids because the water keeps their eyes moist.

  6. yes. although fish cant blink or close their eyes, they do actually sleep. they tend to go to the bottom to sleep or go in plants but some fish have to keep moving slowly otherwise they drown!

  7. yeah my goldfish go to the bottom of the tank and just stay still

  9. Yes, they do.  Even though they have no eyelids, they hide under rocks, etc, at night and sleep.
