As you all know, many tornadoes have hit the Midwest in the past few days. I will be driving on Interstate 90 from Minnesota to Wyoming next week. Is this a bad idea? Is there any chance a tornado might cross my path while I'm driving? If so, what should I do?

  1. Only God knows. Really.  Do as most and just bring your Bible and pray every mile you drive.

  2. As an avid Storm Chaser, I'd be excited to take a drive along I-90 and find a tornado.  However, predicting a tornado a week in advance is pretty hard to do.  What I can offer is a little advice on Thunderstorm dynamics instead.  Tornadoes form at the rear of the thunderstorm and are usually close to the hail shaft.  This means that as long as you can see the whole storm, keep it in front of you as it moves from left to right.  If you are caught in the middle of a storm and it starts to hail, and the hail starts getting bigger in size and amount you could be very close to the tornado.  Try and drive away from that part of the storm at a right angle.  Finally, you may want to go to Radio Shack and buy a NOAA Weather Radio, one of those portable or mobile ones.  Put it in your vehicle, and then you can have it monitor the weather conditions while you're traveling.  It will give you plenty of notice if conditions are right for tornado formation at your location.  I hope I've helped?

  3. Severe weather is very unpredictable more than 3 days out.  I would need to know the dates of your trip to even have the slightest idea of a chance at severe thunderstorms.  Right now, it does look like there will be the opportunity later in the week for severe T-Storms along I-90 on Thursday and maybe Friday.

  4. 100% chance... yes
