I'm 53 and wanting to change careers. I need a grant to help me. I paid for grant search software and I am beginning to think it's a rip off. They all seem to be limited to organizations etc, not regular people. Where can I go to see if funding is available for something like this?

  1. You should always avoid any scholarship or grant offers that require you to pay something up front.  These are almost always fraudulent in nature.

Try taking a look at fastweb.com.  They are one of the most reputable online sites offering assistance in finding scholarships.  And they are FREE.

    Good luck!

  2. The only grants the government gives to individuals that I know of are for college.  You were ripped off.

Applying for federal financial aid for college is free at http://fafsa.ed.gov  The key here is the government will only pay if you are working for a certificate or a degree at an approved school.

Look through this list of horseshoeing schools. http://www.netpets.org/horses/horserv/fa...

If they are listed as a Community College, Vocational School, University or even some private schools, you might be able to get federal aid to attend... check to see if the school is on the list for receiving federal aid here.

    http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLoo...

If you find they have a school code, you might could get a federal grant or a federal student loans to attend.

Also, you might contact your school and see if they have any suggestions.  I'm sure you aren't the only one who couldn't come up with the cash to go.

Also be aware this is a physically demanding career!!

  3. Start at your state's education website. In some states with large numbers of horse owners the state will offer grants, loans, and other incentives to get people into the business. In some states nearly all the vets do housepet work and the state offers incentives to get veterinary students to specialize in large animals. There may be similar votech incentives for farriers.
