My daughter has a 1995 Eagle Talon DOHC 4cyl, manual tranny, that her and her boyfriend changed the timing belt on and afterwards the car wouldn't run. Compression was 0 on all 4 cyls so I had her take the valve cover off and look inside. They found that all 8 rollers had come off the rockers on the intake side only and they are able to get the rollers back on but need to know if the valve lash adjustment on that engine is self-adjusting or if it needs to be done manually. This motor is brand new with less than 5000 miles on it. They damaged the timing belt when they forgot to tighten a bolt down when they replaced the water pump. The car ran fine and then just stopped, I'm assuming from the rollers getting knocked out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  1. It not question about valve lash. It is a question whether the mechanic retimed the it proper when he put the new water pump on. One tootle off will throw the valve timing off. They will make noise. And can damage the valve and piston. Because they are hitting the tops of the pistons.. It the time belt was not proper tighten. It jumped time. I would be sure perprices to find those intake valves are bend. It was shock of the pistion hitting the. That engine will bend exhaust valves as well. Most likey it will turn over but not run. And sound like it is free wheeling. That because the is no compression. The time belf will need to be retimed. And the new belt will need to be replace.  And most likey the tensor will need to be replaced. You may be looking for a used head if it happen at spped. And may need to replace pistons.

The valve lash is set when you install the rocker. It should be around 8 to 10. If it is more than that. You could have hyrail lift damage or camshaft damage. If it is more than that the valve are damage. They would been able to put the rock back on otherwise. Unless they back off on the cups. Finial Valve ajustment is made when the engine is runnin and up to temper. Then you tighten or loosing then till the tapping goes way. After that the hyrauled lifter will keep then in adjustment. Today car and truck in the Asian and American model are so tight put together they will damage the valves if the timing up over 5 t***s. You have a major mess on your hands. That mechine shop work going to be need and a up and running mechanic, that up to speed. Bases the top end will need a good bit of work. Unless you want but a new head. The rest will not come in to view till the head come off. The cam need to be eyeball for any tell tell damage. So you may end up with a engine rebuild.

  2. you need to take the car back to the mechanic who replaced the water pump and have him fix it. I wouldnt have touched the motor.
