Port Canaveral to Get Big New Disney and Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships

Port Canaveral, which came from nowhere to become the world's third busiest cruise ship home port, is facing an even brighter future as a result of two new deals with Royal Caribbean and Disney cruise lines.

Royal Caribbean on March 19th submitted a letter of intent to base what is currently one of its two largest cruise ships, Freedom of the Seas, at Port Canaveral in May 2009 after taking delivery of an even larger ship, the new Genesis.

Since Royal Caribbean is removing Port Canaveral's current largest ship, Mariner of the Seas, in Jan. 2009 to shift the vessel to Los Angeles, word that it ultimately will be replaced by an even larger vessel comes as good news for Central Florida residents.

"Based on the popularity of Mariner of the Seas at Port Canaveral, we look forward to and anticipate similar success for Freedom of the Seas," said Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International.

Meanwhile, Disney Cruise Line finalized an agreement with Port Canaveral to extend its current contract 15 years and announced that it will make the port the home of two new 4,000-passenger cruise ships currently under construction.

The two new Disney ships will begin sailing from Port Canaveral in 2011 and 2012.

The port will extend the Disney dock, currently used by Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, and will enlarge the terminal and build a new parking structure.

"This agreement reflects Disney’s commitment to Central Florida and success at Port Canaveral," said Disney Cruise Line president Tom McAlpin. "We are proud to call Port Canaveral our homeport.""
