  1. I think you mean cruise lines and not ocean liners. Ocean liners stopped transporting people when airplanes started to cross the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans faster and cheaper than ocean lines could.

That in mind, there are no cruise lines that travel from the U.S. to Vietnam, and there probably won't be for some time due to the distance and time required to make the journey across the Pacific. However, there are many cruise lines that make regular port calls to Vietnam. Most of them sail from Singapore, Australia or Hong Kong and usually make their port call in Ho Chi Minh City. Ironically, most of the cruise travelers are European despite embarking from Asian ports.

The cruise ships usually dock at the Southernmost end of the Saigon River along District 1 within walking distance of Ben Thanh Market and most of the attractions there. You will know when a cruise ship is making a port call because District 1 will be filled with glassy-eyed Caucasians riding in cyclos trying to find the best deals on clothing and Nike running shoes.

What may surprise you is there are cruise ships that leave from Vietnam. My wife and I looked into them for a possible honeymoon, and they're relatively cheap.

  2. This article lists many of the cruise lines that now stop in Vietnam: http://cruises.about.com/b/a/256359.htm

Whether they stop or come from the US west coast, I don't know, but I'm sure you could find out by calling or contacting a cruise specialist or travel agent.

  3. The only thing I could think of would be freighter ships.
