  1. Yes there is an adapter to convert M16s and AR 15s to .22

There are also AR looking .22 caliber guns

  2. DPMS/Panther arms makes an AR type rifle in .22LR caliber.

It is a standard AR lower, with a dedicated .22LR upper, A standard upper can also easily be attached to this rifle in several calibers such as .223, 7.62x39, and 6.8mmPC.

Switching upper assembelies on an AR takes only a moment.

There is a Checzoslovokian .22LR upper reciever assembely that will fit any AR/M16 as well, and is very reasonably priced.

There are several kits that replace the bolt assembely and use a chamber adapter to convert any standard.223  AR15/M16 to .22LR, the most famous being that made by Johnathan A. Ceiner. Again installing or removing this kit takes only a few moments.

Armini Jaeger of Italy also used to make a .22LR and a .32ACP version of the AR design that was designed as a .22 and could not be converted to a .223 rifle. This same design was copied by Mitchell Arms who also produced .22LR M16 style rifles.

Finally there is a Phillipene .22LR copy of the AR/M16 design made by Armscor. It does not look exactly like an AR/M16, as the Jaeger and Mitchell rifles did, but is still designed to look fairly similar to one.

The DPMS and Armscor rifles and the Chezk and Ceiner conversion kits are still in production, while the Jeager and Mitchell guns are not. However it is not unusual to find the Jeager guns in particular used at gun shows.

All of these .22 AR options offer a lot of shooting fun at a fraction of the cost of shooting an AR15 in .223. or other centerfire caliber.

  3. for everyone who doesn't understand the letters and numbers they're using: M= military designation. AR= stands for armalite,

Armalite tagteamed with colt to make such weapons as the AR50, different story.

"They" refering to colt-armalite do NOT produce a version of the AR model 15 in .22 S,L,LR, or WMR.

though to argue your point, you could say that 5.56mmx45 does equate to .22 of an inch projectile.

  4. The AR-15 and .22LR use the same diameter projectile (.223) just one is a really small rimfire and the other is a longer centerfire.  You can buy a conversion kit that replaces the Bolt Carrier group and extractor and gives you a .22LR magazine that fits in the AR's mag well.  The conversion takes about 30 seconds and costs around 200 bucks.

You just open the clamshell, pull back on the charging handle to drop out the Bolt Carrier.  Put the conversion in it's place, re-seat the Charging Handle and close the clamshell.  Then stick a loaded mag in and start plinking away with your AR-22LR. But there are 2 problems: Don't expect accuracy.  The twist rate of an AR is not sufficient to stabilize a 22LR and tend to 'key hole' and be inaccurate. Secondly, unless you use premium copper 22s, you can lead foul the barrel badly requiring alot of scrubbing every time you shoot it.

For the same amount of money, go buy a Ruger 10/22 or Remington 597 and have a dedicated 22 LR plinker that is cheap to feed, fun to shoot and much more accurate.

  5. Cheaperthandirt.com has a conversion kit for just under $300. It's for the ar15 which is the civillian version of the m16. And you can change it back when you want to without having to replace the barrel.

  6. First off the M16 is a full auto firearm. I doubt they make a .22 M16... WHAT they do make is a .22 conversion kit for an AR15. The AR15 is the civilian semi auto version of the M16 or M4..... Take a look below....

  7. For a while I saw advertised an adapter for the M-15 (civilian version of the M-16) to allow you to fire .22 LR rather than 5.56x45mm but I don't know how well they work.  Someone was selling these at the last gun show I attended.

  8. when my dad was in the army they used to target shoot with their m16s on their down time. To cut down on the cost of ammo he and his buddies bought adapters and shot .22 Lr rounds through their rifles with great success.
