Question:

Does anyone know if this can work?

I would love to get active, but I don't have the money to go to a gym and it's over 105 degrees outside. What I DO have is a bicycle. I love to ride it at night when it's cool, but I can't really keep it up because I need to get up early the next day.

I have a weird idea rattling around in my head... why not make my bike immobile, so I can exercise on it inside my cool house? But what I need help with is

1) is it even logical :P and

2) how can I make it happen? like keep it upright, keep the back wheel from turning, etc. Anything will help, thanks!

  1. It is called a trainer. One of the big brands is Cycle Ops. Good stuff.

  2. I love riding my bike also. I live in phoenix,az  so its pretty hot here too. But bike riding is awesome. I highly recommend keeping up with it.

Alternatively.. If you want a stationed bike, just install pegs on the back of the bike. and have the back end elevated. so bascially the back end of the bike is in the air, while the front is not. The back wheel will be spinning but its not catching any traction, because the back wheel is what gives you your drive. that should pretty much solve the problem.

    cheers

  3. Your local bike shop will have the stands that you will need. It will hold the bike upright, while holding the rear wheel up off of the ground.

  4. Google "Stationary Trainer" or "Turbo Trainer" or if you're up for it "Rollers"

Night riding is great though. I usually have a little nap after my commute home, have some food and then spend an hour or two on the quiet roads. Lovely and serene...until you get some idiot in a BMW race past with music on...

  5. I dont think it would work because if you immobilize the rear wheel  you wont be able to peddle and if you some how raise the rear wheel from the floor it will spin with no friction so the peddles would feel as soft as if your going down a hill and thats not much of a work out is it? but they do sell work out bikes that are immobile and are specialy for working out and cost as little as $50.
