  1. Makowiak is a family name for someone who comes from Makow county in Poland or from the town Makow - there are two towns by this name in Poland. so it is a polish name. i did not found Jewish family by this name, though there are Jewish family names after Makow: Makower (pronounced Makover) and Makowiski. Nevertheless, if that Shimon Makowiak was a jew, no daubt he was Ashkenazi.

  2. i think he was ashkenazi. sounds very eastern european.

  3. Nope its polish

    edit

If you found a shimon mackowiak than yes he was jewish and ashkenazi shimon=simon,as others have said jews did adopt placenames or their profession as surnames.

  4. Origin of this surname is not jewish. This surname can Polish or Ukrainian origin. But jewish people from Poland or Ukraine can have this surname.

  5. No it is not jewish

  6. Most last names that Jews have are not Jewish in origin.  So just because someones last name is Goldstein, Horowitz, Fein, ect. It dousnt mean he or she is Jewish or even has Jewish origin. More non Jews have these names than Jews.

Jews use to have there names something like this "Adam ben Moshe" which means Adam son of Moses. The countries they resided in later required everyone to have a last name, so they normally adopted similar names that non Jews chose or names based on there trade, location or type of landscape they live in.
