  1. the number plate can be transferred to another vehicle  on payment of  ÃƒÂ‚£125 to £300 (depending on number) to the DVLA and filling in the correct forms but remember the donor vehicle (one with the plate you want) MUST be taxed, insured and have Current MOT when you ask for the transfer .

    if the vehicle has been scrapped the number plate ownership transfers to the DVLA and can be sold on after 6 months

  2. You apply to have the plate put on retention. You use a form V778/1. It will cost you £105, £80 for the transfer fee and £25 for the retention fee. If, after 12 months on rentention, the plate hasn't been assigned to another vehicle, you will have to pay for a further 12 months (£25). If you assign the plate to a car that is older than what the plate indicates, the DVLA might refuse the transfer. i.e. a Y-plate being assigned to a car registered in 1991. You must make your application to your local DVLA office. Check out their website to find your nearest one.

  3. You do own the licence plate.  I think it's called a 'cherised transfer'.  All of the information should be on http://www.dvla.gov.uk

  4. no you are can't take a number plate of a car. do not try or you could get done by the police.

  5. The registration plate is yours assuming that you own the car that goes with the plate.  Note the DVLA registration document is not a document of title, it just states who the registrered keeper is.  You can transfer the plate from you old car to another vehicle and DVLA charge an administration fee for doing this.  Its not complicated, log onto their web site and follow the propmpts or you can pick up the forms froma  main post office (if there is one near you.)

  6. Yes ask them   the plate can be transferred to another vehicle

  7. Hey Zoe, Yes I think that's possible, as you do own the registration for that car, contacting the DVLA and asking them for more information might be the best thing to do.

  8. All the info you need is here;

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Buy...

    The car will need to be road legal for you to retain the number plate - it must have an MOT & current tax (the DVLA MAY consider cases where the tax has expired within the last twelve months) - the DVLA will then issue another registration number to the car, which you may then keep, sell or scrap.

    Your 'cherished' number will then be kept on retention, and you may transfer it to another vehicle whenever you want.

  9. You can transfer the registration number from your old car to your new car, for a transfer fee of £80.

    However, both vehicles need to be taxed and MOT'd at the time of transfer.

    Alternatively, you can keep the registration number from your old car on a Retention Certificate - this is a little more expensive. This means that the DVLA will issue a fresh registration number to your old car, and you retain the cherished number for future use.

    The car you're taking the number from needs to be taxed and MOT'd - so don't wait until the MOT runs out and you're ready to scrap the car!

    Bear in mind that you cannot use a registration number that makes your car appear newer than it it - so if your cherished number was AA 54 AAA, you couldn't put it on a car registered before 2004.

    You will find all the relevant information on the DVLA website.
