My husband is trying to decide whether or not to join the National Guards. He is trying to weed through all of the false information from recruiters. He so far has been told that he gets 100% school paid for, never has to be sent to war and lots of money. I am specifically looking for anyone who is currently in the National Guards or was in the National Guards, to tell me if you can be made to be on active duty and sent out of the United States in to a war zone. What does the National Guard really do????

  1. Yes, the national guard can get activated and sent to war, and it's happening now. There are many national guard units currently in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting alongside active duty soldiers. There isn't that much of a distinction nowadays. Never completely trust a recruiter.

  2. Its possible that schooling is different from state to state, but I know from having two sons in the National Guard that their schooling is NOT 100% paid for unless the laws have changed in the last 6 months. He CAN be sent where ever the NG decides to send him. Including, but not limited to Iraq and Afghan.  Both my boys have been deployed. Lucky for now that including training, its only a year now.

The NG trains one weekend a month and two weeks every year. They can be mobilized for disasters here on US soil, or can be deployed to a multitude of foreign lands. Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia are three that come to mind immediatley.

  3. Joining the military and afraid to serve in a war zone?  The Guard will be better off without him in my opinion.

So he wants to join, reap all the benefits, but when he is called upon, he would rather scurry away in the shadows?  Give me a break!

  4. Honestly, does that sound realistic to you?  His tuition paid for, no deploying, and "lots of money"?  The national guard DOES deploy.  Since he is only in the reserves, the money will not be good seeing as he only works one weekend a month.  If he gets activated then he will get the same pay as an active duty soldier.  If he doesn't want to get deployed and is just trying to get as much as he can without actually doing anything, i suggest he doesn't join.

  5. The guard is sent first.

Beginning with Desert Storm #1 that has became their purpose.

If he enlists, he will go.

Every unit of the guard has already gone once, and most units have already gone a second time.

    Join and go!
