I have looked and there are no schools where I live, is it possible to learn and test for belts and achieve ranks through corespondents like videos in the keichu-do "cajun karate" style?

  1. What the h**l is Cajun karate !!!!!!  Does it come with gumbo kata !  Find yourself a real karate school in your area.  Goju ryu, shotokan, shito ryu ...etc

  2. Correspondent karate courses are scams.  They cost a ton of money and there is no real way to learn martial arts without proper instruction in a school/gym.  Without an instructor in front of you, there is no way for you to be corrected immediately.  Some require you send in a video of yourself performing the techniques, some don't.  Even if they do, they can't provide help on the spot.  There's also the issue of sparring - if you never spar, you don't really know how to fight.  Paraphrasing Bruce Lee, you can't learn to swim on dry land.

There are always ads for those in Black Belt Magazine.  One guy says send him $1500 and he'll send you videos and a black belt in his karate system.  You might as well save $1475 and buy the black belt out of the martial arts catalog.

There is no martial arts teaching around you at all?  You've looked everywhere?  It seems almost every place has some sort of martial arts school within a few miles.

Edit:  I think you're just going to have to start over in another style.  You cannot earn a true black belt from a video.  Belts really don't matter, anyway.  Continue training on your own in the style and perfect what you've learned already.  It will be much more beneficial than paying a ton of money for something that cannot help you much and a de facto honorary black belt.

  3. If I were you I'd try Ken Penland's Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu yo.  This man is a well respected teacher who has passed away, but his techings live on and his videos are the best around.  Shorinji Ryu Jujitsu isn't a scam that's for sure. http://www.cjmas.com/index.php?main_page... try this link and check it out.  You can also purchase these DVD's one at a time if need be.  DVD's are like having your own sensei at home with you who's always on call.  Every time you need to review a technique you just check it out on video until you've got it down to a science.  You'll need a training partner though who's also interested in what you're doing with the DVD's.

    Good luck.
