We do not have the DVR or Tivo. All we would like to be able to do is record stuff that you would watch off tv.

Right now we havd just a dvd and vcr combo. But are not able to watch vhs. So before we spend the money to buy a new dvd player one that can record. We want to make sure there will be no conflict.

  1. No there should be no problem as long as you wire like this.

    1) Coax from wall into STB (set top box)

    2) Outputs of STB go into DVD/VCR recorder.  The type of cords used will be dictated by the input/output jacks on the DVD/VCR recorder.

    3) Output cords from DVD/VCR to TV.

    4) Turn on all 3 components.  Tune the STB to what you want to record, tune the TV to the type of input you are using.

    5) Now tune the DVD/VCR to channel 3 (usually that is the channel).  If that doesn't work just keep changing the DVD/VCR channel till you can see what you have tuned the STB to.  Once you have that image you will be all set to record.

Just be aware that if you change the channel while recording, you will also change what is being recorded.  I would suggest going to Verizon FIOS (if available) and getting the DVR box where you can record one program and watch another at the same time.  You will also be able record as  I have stated above.
