Question:

Does anyone know much about different styles of volleyball and how they differ from country to country?

These are some of the snippets that I've heard here and there...

Asian teams having really outstanding ball control.

Brazilians having dynamic creative play (run cool plays).

European power volleyball.

Why are there characteristics that are specific to certain countries? How do they train differently?

What is the U.S. volleyball style?

I've read in an old article that the U.S. can not compete skill-wise because other countries start earlier, so the U.S. has to play more tactical volleyball. Is that still true?

  1. I think there is a 9 man team volleyball, played in China?  It is on a bigger court...

Google around, and you'll find more information.

Certain countries have children playing at a very young age - and when you play with/against such players - you know they have spent their life playing the game.  Like some pacific islanders, who play regularly at their church.

  2. I'm assuming that you are talking about the Men's game being a guy:

I'll agree with your assessment about the global teams. Poland and Russia are primarily the same as in the power game, Brazil and Cuba are exciting to watch and they run a lot of innovative tandems, while Japan and China really could win alot of medals if winning was based on passes and overall ball control. The U.S. team though, for over 20 years, has been looking for an identity.

While it's true that U.S. Volleyball was at a loss for a long time due to other countries grassroots programs being far superior. I think that is starting to change. There is a lot more grassroots going on now, especially men's, than even ten years ago. Also, the U.S. lacked a go-to-guy since Karch Kiraly retired from the national team. But now, Reid Priddy is the closest thing we've had to "indoor Karch" in a long time.

In the majority of the world, volleyball is given the status of what we give Basketball, Football, and even Golf and Tennis. There are pro volleyball teams everywhere and at least 1 pro league in every major FIVB competing country.

We have a pro beach league...that along with the fact that beach volleyball was a California/U.S game until very recently, is a big reason why our beach teams really can't be touched except for maybe Brazil, which has a large beach game as well.

The U.S. team doesn't really have a strength per se. But more recently, the U.S. has just been playing clean fundamental volleyball. Whereas teams with gimmicks have holes in other areas. We have depth at Setter, and are very strong at outside .

I'll let you know more later as I get another chance this summer to see the national team play in Green Bay. I saw them last year against Japan and just about everyone was hurt. it'll be nice to see them at full strength again before heading to Beijing.

  3. hmmmm interresting but idk. why are you so obsessed with everything volleyball? lol its not a bad thing
