Does anyone know of a car rental company in New Zealand that let you cross the interisland ferry with the car?

I need to drive from Napier to Christchurch which involves crossing New Zealand's Cook Straight. I want to find a rental car company that will let me hire a car in Napier and drop it off in Christchurch. Most I have found so far make you leave your car in Wellington and pick up another in Picton.

  1. Why would you want to pay the ferry cost for the car. It makes sense to drop off and pick up and it would be hard for the company to retrieve the car back to their base from the other island. For a big price I guess they will let you do it.Try Appollo

  2. That is because it costs so much money for the rental car company to retrieve it back once it's on the other side of the island!  They let rental campervans on the ferry all the time.

You may have to bite the bullet and hire a new one at the Picton ferry terminal.

  3. Hi Emma

Most companies will want you to take a second car ... thats fine and doesn't actually take too much more time than unloading and loading a car on the Ferry.

Depending on what time of the year you are travelling, some may actually want cars to go from the Nth Island to the South, and so will pay the crossing charges and you get to keep the same car ... best to talk with them direct.

I like Ace Rentals ... good cars and a nice company to deal with

  4. Yes, there is company that  actually pays your one way ferry charges.  Research through car rental companies in Google or Yahoo.  Condition applied.
