I'm lookong for another way to treat ADD/ADHD. The drug Stratterra is effective but it costs about $400 per/month! Please let me know if there is some herb/vitamin/counseling that can be used to treat ADD/ADHD. Thank you in advance.

  1. Call your doctor office and tell them its just to much its costing you and see if you can get it changed to "something that has a generic" like adderall or ritalin.

Ask for somthing that has a generic, you dont want to tell them you want "adderall" or "ritalin".

You could call your insurance and find out of any of these medications are covered and let the doctors office know what is so they can deside what to give you.

    Adderall XR--

    Focolin XR--

    VYance--

    Concerta--

    Ritalin--

  2. A month of 10 mg Ritalin (generic) costs about $32 or less.  It is JUST as effective, in the minds of many doctors.  Behavioral and diet changes can help reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

ADD:  Fish oil is very good for many things.  I personally use a very good brand as well as other quality supplements.  However, I "present" with extreme ADD symptoms (a result of cognitive damage from a heart operation), and the Ritalin does work better than the natural ways.  I would keep to the minimum dosage (with the generic, I do not use it on weekends, only when I need to work).

I would also seek counseling, as there are behavioral changes that you can make to reduce the ADD/ADHD.  Cognitive behavioral therapy is especially good.

  3. There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn't really looked at closely for this, but the EPA and DHA in Fish Oil help with all sorts of things including heart health, skin health, and brain health.

Give it a try... it's economical, safe, and easy. Just make sure that the company you get it from uses Molecular Distillation because that's currently the only safe way to remove any trace contaminants of any heavy metals. Good luck!

  4. Stratterra is NOT a first line med for ADD/ADHD---u might want to consider Ritalin since it comes in a generic form and is much cheaper---i am not aware of any herb or vitamin to help with ADD however a high protein diet helps with mental function and Melatonin helps with sleep---hope this helps
