The best free one is probable SUPER but WinAVI is pretty good for the odd film,

in my personal experience,the freeware always have some problems  more or less. its quality can not be guaranteed, i always use xilisoft video converter, It can convert between almost all popular video formats including DVD, VCD, MOV, RM, AVI, MPEG, WMV, MPEG1/2/4, 3GP, Xvid, h264, FLV, etc, and also convert video files to all popular audio files such as MP2, MP3, AC3, RA, M4A, OGG, AAC etc. it's not free, but it works pretty well, I think it well worth the money, If you need more info, here you can free download it

I know a very good converter that can convert between almost all popular video and audio formats in high quality at fast speed. that is Nidesoft video converter.  it is not free, but it is very cheaper. I think little money spent on such a good software worth.

pick your program from the others ,but i find downloading a "codec" program as well helps.

you could try "free easy burner" for audio files also.

"piolet"is a music only site ,that is good and fast.

try~"k-lite codec pack" it's free and the one i use.
