  1. Sure. It's when parents sit with their children and read. Parents.... teach your kids to read!


  2. I used the older version of Hooked on Phonics.  It has short stories on graduating levels.  Each story has questions to check for understanding.  I am not sure you can even buy this older program at a store.  However, I see the sets at thrift stores on occassion and you can always try ebay.

    Another way to enhance reading is to have the child read the newspaper.  Newspapers are written on a 7th grade level or below.  It is a real moral booster to the child to read something that seems "so grown up".

    If the child panics when asked to read the paper (and some will, all of those words are intimidating) give them a highlighter.  Ask them to just do the front page and highlight every word they know.  They will be astounded how many of those words they already know.  This encourages them to learn more.
