I was just curious. I know about alcoholism and the basics of it. I know I am definitely not an alcoholic or ever will be one. I don't need it to function or any of that stuff. I'm just curious b/c I always joke around that I'm a borderline alcoholic, lol, but sometimes it's not funny. Once I start drinking I have a hard time stopping, get angry or belligerent when I can't keep on drinking or there's no more alcohol, etc. I find myself bringing beer to things like just hanging out at someones house. I don't get wasted, or even drunk, but I definitely have more than legally allowed. The only times I actually say, No I'm not drinking is when I'm driving other people, or know there's police everywhere...Anyway..Just curious..And please, I'm not in the mood for anybody's b.s. answers, like OMG Just don't drink...So, save your self and me the time and keep your mouth shut.

  1. I don't believe in border line alcoholics, they don't exist and I think you know that. With your aggressiveness, you are the worse kind. Alcoholism is a disease and you need to seek help right away. How will you feel if you get belligerent enough you hurt somebody or yourself and lose your job. What about driving yourself, then having an accident and maybe kill someone or yourself. Then end up in prison or an institute.Life is great and you seem to care or you wouldn't be asking questions. You need to contact Alcoholics Anonymous and get some professional help before it is to late. I wish for you the very best sir.

  2. I am certainly not going to say "OMG just don't drink" but I have to tell you that there is no such thing as "borderline alcoholism". You are an alcoholic, or you aren't. Alcoholics are not like they are displayed in the movies, not every alcoholic is some jobless bum who is always drunk. Many alcoholics are highly functioning, and many dont drink every day. But having "a hard time stopping" like you describe is the common factor among alcoholics- once they do drink stopping is very difficult. If you want to try it, there is a screening quiz for alcoholism that was developed by Johns Hopkins University and is used pretty frequently. I found an online version of it at about.com. Answer the questions based on the last 12 months.

If you want to look into getting help, I would highly recommend AA. It is truly an amazing program. You can learn more about it at www.aa.org (once again- not like they make it seem in the movies). Good luck to you.

  3. I think it is good that you are asking this question.

Although you may not be an alcoholic you admit that it is sometimes hard to stop once you start.

Also including a beer while just hanging out will gradually increase your tolerence to alcohol.

As your tolerence increases although you may not be wasted or drunk your blood alcohol level will most likely climb beyond legal levels without your being aware of it.

Many folks get away with this for a long time.

And you may never become physically dependent on alcohol to the extent that you go into withdrawl and DT's ect if you stop drinking.

However, statistically, the odds are stacked against you.

That doesn't mean you are presently an alcoholic but how close to the fire do you want to dance?

Also the end of your question telling folks to keep their mouth shut if they write what you don't want to hear doesn't prove anything except that you are pretty sensitive about this subject.

The truth of the matter is I think you are concerned that you may be on a slippery slope and you kinda want some body to give you their honest opinion.

So, maybe you should just see what happens if you drink less.

I am not saying stop completely.

Limit yourself to 2 -3 drinks. Tell yourself before that three is the limit.

Or start your self on a decreasing amount schedule.

I had a patient in the the hospital who said he had been an alcoholic & who  also said he used to drink 25 beers a day. So he drank 24 the next day, 23 the following day and so on.

That was the painless way he got down to 1 beer a couple of times a week and on special occassions. This was only after he had lost several jobs.

Just try drinking a little less. How do you feel?

You will probably be able to tell from the way your body tolerates the decrease where you are as far as becoming physicaly dependent on alcohol.

    Good Luck

  4. You can easily do research by typing in "alcoholism" on your homepage.  Either Yahoo or Google.  There's SO much info!

Btw, if you ever can NOT go one day without alcohol, then you DO have a problem.  :)

  5. How about "potential alcoholic"?
