Question:

Does anyone know of an effective cat deterrent?

My garden has recently been covered with hard landscaping in the form of pea grit for easy maintenance. Unfortunately, now the local cats seem to think I have supplied a giant litter tray for their use. I don't own a cat and I'm getting quite annoyed having to clean up their droppings! If anyone can advise me of an effective way to stop the cats doing this in my garden, I would be most grateful. :)

ONLY serious answers please. Thank you.

  1. Pepper usually works as they don't like the feel of it on their paws, or the smell of it. In gardening centres you can also buy "Animal Repellent" stuff in containers that will keep cats AND dogs away.

Also, some places will sell special sensors that will frighten away animals with a noise (loud or ultrasonic, I'm not sure) or a flash of light.

You could also use a dog. Keep them in the garden for a while and eventually the cats won't go near because they are frightened of danger that lurks there. However, don't let the dog attack the cat or you'll be in huge trouble!

Hope this helps...I asked a relative who owns a cat. So I'm not 100% sure myself of this!

  2. I just started a Square Foot garden and well they just love that loose soil.  Oh but NO! not in my garden.  So I've done the cayenne powder and planning to put around the perimeter of the frame some crinkled aluminum foil their paws are tender and don't want to touch that foil.  In your case your is a decorative border so probably a cayenne, pepper mixture.

  3. Yep and IF you have fencing around your garden you need only a bag of nails and a ball of string or garden wire. Start at the beginning of your fence and tap in a nail on the very top of your fence. Wind the string/garden wire around the nail, then continue like this, all the way around your fence top ensuring the string/gardenwire is pulled taught and is about an inch high of the fence. It's cheap and VERY effective at keeping cats out of the garden simply because a cat cannot go, where it cannot balance! good Luck.

  4. Black pepper. Sprinkle it liberally around the areas you do not want cats to go into.

    Good luck

  5. Get some plastic bottles and fill them with water. "Plant" them around your garden and the cats won't go near it as they see their own reflections and think there is another cat already in your garden.

My neighbours have done it and it has worked brilliantly.

  6. Most cats don't like the smell of citrus, so orange and lemon peelings often work.

  7. bb gun, myself i live out in the country and use a 410 shotgun then the buzzards and hawks  have them gone by the morning

  8. a shot gun should do the trick,

  9. Sprinkle Chili Powder around your garden. I know it sounds mean, but it works! And it won't harm them.
