Question:

Does anyone know of an electric car with top speed of 60mph and a price of under $20,000?

Hello. I'm considering buying an electric car but they either sell for $14,000 with a top speed of 25mph, or they sell for $100,000 with a top speed of 180mph with 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. There seems to be no middle ground. Its either an affordable but insanely slow car, or a Ferrari type car which no one can afford. Right now I'm spending $70 to fill up my Jeep and I really can't take it anymore. I know that a year and a half from now, the gas will be almost $6 a gallon. I just can't do that.

  1. well there is the Aptera that is comming out soon that gets 340 mpg and has a top speed of about 80.

  2. I'm in the same boat as you... I drive a Jeep and although I LOVE it, I am on the verge of trading it in and getting a bicycle!! Seriously, I'm still looking and I can only afford under 20k myself. I've only found some around 40k that are nice. My dad is getting an electric truck from www.phoenixmotorcars.com that is being sold to California right now, and soon will come to the rest of the states by next year (or the next year, they keep changing it). I can't afford that though....so hopefully within the next couple years more cars will be coming out with a bigger variety in price and options. My dream is to modify my electric car to SOLAR ENERGY....which need to be produced now!

  3. I dont think there is any car that type under $20,000. Im  a nerd when it comes to cars. The only way i know you can find a car that price is if you got the hook up. =D

  4. I don't think there is any right now, but if you can wait a few more months:  check the web sites for more information:

    www.phoenixmotorcars.com and

    www.zenncars.com

Not sure if they will be under $20,000, but sure they won't be nearly as expensive as Teslas.

  5. You're going to have to build your own electric car.  You can purchase the parts necessary for around $7,000 but you'll have to do ALL of the work yourself or find someone to do it and this can cost you upwards of $10,000.

You'll have to have the vehicle's frame strengthened and maybe modified to accommodate the battery pack.  Some cars make good 'donor' cars for conversion and other don't.  You'll want something with a strong rear suspension because batteries are heavy and something without rust that you like looking at because you'll probably keep this vehicle for a long time.

If you're handy this is a good project since if it breaks down you'll probably be the one to fix it unless you know someone familiar with electric cars.  For me I hope to be driving around in my own by the end of the year!

  6. I know what you are going through, problem is seems almost like the fix is in on the electric cars, they all keep saying next year, next year and so on or they are available only to government or fleet operations but somehow never make it to the public.

What I would suggest for you is to buy an interum car like a 94 to 97 Geo Metro LS (4 door...still cheap to get) and keep the Jeep for family or group outings or when you need to haul something.

Don't panic whatever you do, but seriously look for a low cost interum car till this fuel mess clears up which could well be shortly after the US elections since it is the US that is the root of the oil price problems.

  7. that $70 tank of gas will take you between 300 & 400 miles before you have to spend 5 minutes refiling it.

no electric car at any price will do the same.

  8. might try www.milesev.com

    or www.lionev.com

it's tough to find a 60 mph EV for low prices like that, but they're getting more afforadable.

  9. look on ebay
