Does anyone know of any books or methods for teaching piano to individuals diagnosed with autism?

I am a teacher that works with a student that is learning to play the piano and would be interested in ideas. Thanks

  1. While students with autism are different than students without autism, they are also as diverse as those without autism.  Any good teacher learns to individualize the approach to match the individual student.  Find out what this student likes.  Usually there is a fixation they will do anything for.  Use that.

I don't know of any specific books, but start with the basics that you would with anyone starting to play the piano.  I teach autistic children and we use mainly the same things that normal developing children use.  Music can find something in everyone, and if the students enjoys music, no one could know what piano might unlock in their mind.
