Try GIMP its a free photo shop knock off it can do anything, If you want to make it black and white you can, if you want make it sepia, it can do that too.  If you're restoring old photos the clone and water tools make very sharp images.  It really is something else.  Although I recommend taking the tutorial and using it with msPaint that comes with windows, it's better for cropping, but other than that it's awesome.
