Does anyone know of any good board games?

Question

My friends and family love board (as well as card) games.

Whereas I'm not into them that much. However, I would like some suggestions so that while I'm playing I'm not bored. For some clues however, I do kind of like the game Scattergories...

The best game ever is Apples to Apples.  It's a word association game for 4 or more people.  We've played with 8 yr thru 78 yr old people in the same game!

If you like Scattergories, you might also like Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, Apples to Apples, Taboo, and Scrabble.  They are all different, but have some characteristics in common, particularly in that they are all about language in one way or another.

I'd second Settlers of Catan- it's easy to pick up, but has a lot of depth.

There's a card game called Jack the Ripper that's very good, especially with two players.

A really fun game to play at parties is called Catch Phrase.  It's a timed game, sort of like Password.  You have teams (we usually play guys and gals), and each team takes a turn at guessing the given clue.  You alternate teams, and the team holding the clue box at the end of the timer loses.  It's fast paced, and a lot of fun.  Warning...  it can get loud since people are shouting answers.

Other group games are Outburst, Skip-Bo, Phase10, Mexican Train Dominoes....

My personal all time favorite card game is Uno, it's easy and simple to play and it's very addicting. They use cards with numbers, not the real deck.

I worked as a manager of a game store, for YEARS, so I have seen many many many many games go through my store.  I would suggest a few games, that might not seem like games you would want to play, but are highly regarded as the best board games period.  I would look them up on Amazon.com

Scattergories is one of my favorite games, because you have to be creative.  Other creative games (that I personally like) include Cranium and Pictionary:

-- Cranium: there are four catergories of questions: trivia (true/false, multiple choice, open answer), word games (spelling backwords, word scrambles, fill-in-the-blanks), star performer (humming/whistling a tune, imitate a person/thing, charades), and creative cat (drawing, drawing with your eyes closed, sculpting with clay).  Cranium has various games for different ages, and I've enjoyed all the ones I've played.

-- Pictionary: you form teams, someone on the team draws and the other members guess what you're drawing.

Other fun games that aren't as team-/creative-oriented:

--Carcassonne is a good game where you put down tiles that represent a type of land (e.g. road, field, etc.) to earn points.  It's fun, but requires strategy and isn't a quick game.

--Rummikub is a fun game that involes numbered tiles.  It's similar to the Rummy card game, but every time it's your turn you can reorganize tile groupings around in order to make a new group of tiles that would allow you to put down one of yours.

--Jungle Speed is also a fun game that is very easily accessible.  Each person puts down a card on his/her turn, and if your card matches the design on someone else's, you have to try to grab a wooden totem in the middle of the group.  The designs are pretty similar, so it leads to a lot of confusion and fun.
