  2. Sorry, but your two criteria are mutually exclusive. That combination doesn't exist. It's very simple: There are only a limited number of coastal campgrounds, and the demand far exceeds the supply. People want to escape the heat, and the coast is the natural place to do it.

    (Leo Carillo isn't really the answer. It gets really crowded, since it's the closest coastal campground north of LA).

    Just do what we do: Mark your calendar for Nov 1, Dec 1, Jan 2, and Feb 1. Make your reservation at 8 AM.
