Does anyone know of any learn to sew classes in the South Jersey area?

  1. Call the better sewing machine shops such as Bernina and Janome. They usually have sewing classes going on all the time. Cost is minimal covering usually only the materials needed.

    Classes are from beginner to advanced and some crafts classes too like quilting.


  2. If you want to learn how to sew, please, please, learn to sew by hand first!  You need to understand how to execute hand stitches, learn the technical language of sewing, and just have an understanding on how to do things by hand first.  It's the old school way, but it's invaluable.

    Remember, before the machine, which only came to use about a 150 years, all sewing was done by hand.  Those beautiful parkas made by Inuits, kimonos, and yes, even Goerge Washington, all wore clothes made by hand stitching.  No matter what type of sewing you plan to do, home dec, fashion or quilting, you'll need to know some basic hand stitches.
