Question:

Does anyone know of any mental health retreat centers?

My dad tried to check himself into the mental hospital tonight. After eight hours they discharged him because he kept saying that he didn't want to hurt himself but that he was desperate and at the end of his rope. I am frustrated that they did this and now he is going to a hotel to "think about things". I am really proud of him for asking for help and am wondering if anyone knows of a mental health facility where he could go to get away for a few days and get some help. We live in Washington State but I'm sure he would travel if necessary. Thank you. I'm at a loss.

  1. I'm not from the USA, so I couldn't tell you anything.

But a quick trip to that site should help, fo' sure.

Good luck, and hope there's some smooth sailing ahead.

  2. First of all, you both deserve a pat on the back; you,  for being proud of your father, and your father for being brave and honest.  This kind of situation not always so easy to understand let alone handle.

I'm from the other side of the country, but after a little research I came up with the following places.  Most of them look promising.  At least it will get you off to a good start!

I hope you & your dad can find a good place.  Inpatient mental health hospitals usually all have similar programs, but the doctors that staff them can vary wildly.  Make sure you & your dad know you have the right to leave any place that doesn't feel comfortable... But in the beginning it's probably best to stay with one place until he gets a little stability.

One final thing:  Many state hospitals and acute care hospitals that are sanctioned to accept involuntary admissions are looking to admit people who pose a threat to themselves (suicidal or otherwise). Places like these have their hands full, and many will not take patients who do not fit this criteria.  I've been refused admission for the very same reason, and it took me a while to understand that there's just not enough mental health care for everyone to go around.  This is probably what happened with your dad.

But I have faith you'll find a good place for him, and once you do, it's going to get better.  It may be a long road, but it's going to get better.
