probably a ton of movies made around the time of world war 2 - ie the 1940's - since the genre you are talking about is a romantic melodrama on an epic scale

Braveheart could be another, though its setting is rather antique

probably not a lot of movies made like this anymore since there isn't a lot of large scale love and loss in the american landscape these days
