Baby bird can fly. Is about 6 weeks old. Is eating seeds and greens. The leg sticks straight out from the hip and can bend at knee, toes work also.

  1. That is called splay leg and can easily be fixed in a young bird.  Do some reading on fixing a splay leg or you can take it to your vet.

If you get it fixed now the bird will have a good quailty of life ahead of it.

It involves wrapping the legs together but I don;t know much more about it.

But it is quite fixable.  I would try contacting some breeders who might be able to help you.  A pet store won't have a clue what to do.

Here is a link, you can try this yourself if you are comfortable.

  2. Lots of people experienced with birds would probably be willing to take in the bird. Try local bird clubs or a local avian vet, they could help point you to someone who would be able to correctly care for the bird. You can also contact your local bird rescues and see if they know of someone that can accommodate the bird.

It does sound like the bird has splayed leg (usually caused by insufficient/ inappropriate bedding while the bird is developing right after hatching). At 6 weeks it's getting rather late to correct the issue though. It's usually an easy fix if addressed right away.

The bird can still have a good life, it will just need someone who can adjust for it's disability.

  3. if i were you i would go to a pet store that sells parakeets and ask them. they should help you out.

  4. Check for local bird rescues in your area or ask your vet for a recommendation. You could also check with http://www.bestfriends.org

They have an awesome network and may be able to point you in the right direction.
