Just thinking if I met a special person that I would like to give something to that they would like, certainly not meaning any disrespect as one of my replys is insinuating

  1. Trinket is not a desirable term, token of appreciation is much better.

As in any country, tipping is ideal but children don't get tips, so I buy some books, hair clips, toys, etc.  I always leave something for our room attendant, and service providers along with a tip.  Everything I'm sure is appreciated, no matter if it's money or gifts, except for the people who commented here who have a so-called "chip" on their shoulder.  Don't accept my gift then.

If Jamaicans aren't poor, then why is there vendors vying for the tourists attention?  If I want a souvenier I will go to the shop that sells things I'd like to consider.  I have noticed that only the poorer countries have street vendors, beach vendors, etc.

At our tourist attractions, there's nobody to bother you while you're enjoying the scenery, etc.  It's very relaxing and calm.  I work hard to earn a vacation, I'm far from being wealthy, so for me to be looked upon as a "rich tourist" is offensive.  I shop for specials, wait years to go on a holiday, and when I am on a holiday I want to enjoy and experience the culture, foods, people, history, etc. in a relaxing atmosphere.  To be coersed into buying something I don't really want or need is not acceptable.  I understand they need to make a living, but please don't push the products.  That's what makes it seem like Jamaicans are desperate.  Of course not all are like that, and that's the ones I would consider buying from.  If vedors would "chill" then more tourists would be willing to venture to the various tourist attractions and not just sit at the hotels/resorts.

But what do I know, everyone seems to think we live in igloos, so please when you visit here please bring us some blankets, wood, beads, fishing gear, and canoes.  :)
