www.care2.com has a lot of good groups for discussion related to all kinds of social issues

it would be a great place to start

if you want to do something locally, google your towns name and social services or check with your local United Way agency

I know of a website named ASKWISH.  I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but the concept is pretty simple.  You can ask for things that you wish for and/or offer things that might be helpful to another.  Wish is used in the broadest sense.  You can wish to have someone take you Kayaking, wish to learn a second language or even wish to get a ride from NY to California.  Really you can wish or "dish" (there term for giving) anything you want.  It doesn't cost anything to participate.  Not sure of any other sites.  Maybe do a search for people helping people.  Good luck.
