There were definitely African or Afro-Canadian communities in Nova Scotia, Canada. One of those places was actually called Africaville or something like that, but several years back people got moved out of there and relocated in other parts of Halifax, and the place was demolished. Years ago I was studying black history of Canada and found this out.  

Anyway, some enslaved people in the US fought for the British during the Revolutionary War, and in return, not only were they given freedom but also land or passage back to Africa...and that's how they got there.

I don't have an answer, but your question is interesting. I'm African American and when I google my last name (Morine), there are links related to Nova Scotia. Pretty sure no one in my family is from there however.
