I have a Canon Rebel XTi with a Tamron Af 55-200mm lens, though it takes good pictures... I'm looking for a new lens that takes great sports pictures. I'm would like to find a lens (for a resonable price) that takes good fast action pictures...Any suggestions?

  1. First off, it's not the lens that gets the good shots, it's the photographer. The absolute best thing that you could possibly do to improve your sports shots is to practice by taking as many pictures as you possibly can, and reviewing the work of other sports photographers that you are impressed by.  A truly talented photographer could take good shots with a camera phone if they were so inclined just as an awful one could spend thousands on equipment without getting shots that are any better.

Now that does not mean that better equipment is not going to help a better photographer reach his/her potential.  The general "sports/action lens" is going to be a telephoto which it appears you already have with your 55-200.  If you are looking for a "fast" lens meaning one that will have a larger maximum aperture to allow in more light to allow the use of faster shutter speeds in lower light conditions, then look for something with an aperture of f/2.8 or lower.  Unfortunately, I highly doubt that any telephoto lens that you are able to find with that kind of speed is going to be anywhere near what you would consider a "reasonable" price so you better start saving.  Your really better off keeping the set-up you have now, practicing, and avoiding the "lens envy" that you are undoubtedly getting seeing other pros around wherever you are shooting.

  2. john c puts it nicely.  you will benefit more from learning what you can and cannot do with your current setup, than by investing hundreds of dollars on a "great sports pictures lens."  so, read up on photography and what all the numbers mean, and practice, practice, and practice some more.  once you do that, you will answer your own question.

  3. 30d is supposed to be the best.

I'm not sure what the price is like.
