Question:

Does anyone know of movements to stop the custom of tipping waiters?

I wish the whole tipping custom would fly out the door. We get paid minimum wage/night if we don't make that much in tips. Also, since when did waiting tables become a job one should take home the rent money in one night?

  1. Tipping waiters is not an Australian law. It is not necessary to do that. They get paid appropriately with out these tips to supplement their wage.

  2. Most states only require employers to pay wait staff $2-3 an/hr.  Plus, they have to report a certain percentage of tips for taxes even if they didn't make that much!  Granted, most the waiters I've known have done well, but some don't.  Either the custom needs to go away so the gov't doesn't do this OR the custom needs to stay alive and cheap people shouldn't go out to eat.

  3. You are lucky that you work in a place that pays you minimum wage if you don't make it up in tips.  Most waiters and waitresses do not have that advantage.  Around here waiters and waitresses are paid about $2.45/hour because they are expected to make up the rest in tips.  And if they don't, they don't get extra wages...they just try to make it up the next day.  I've never been a server, never want to be.  And that's exactly WHY I am more than willing to tip those who have the strength and ability to wait tables.  When I go out to eat, I keep in mind that I am going to leave a tip and make sure to have enough money that I will be able to do so.  To not leave a tip for good service is cheap and rude.

  4. The restaurant industry should be brought in line with all other industries and ordered to pay minimum wage to all employees.  It should not be the responsibility of the restaurant patron to make up any shortcoming in the employees' income.  The food at restaurants is in general overpriced and not very large portions.  It's insane and keeps many people away from restaurants.

If you truly enjoyed your meal and had terrific service, feel free to tip your server.  But it should never be expected that you leave a tip.  What a society of enablers we are..

  5. You sound cheap.

  6. I know of this one movement called: If u aint got no money keep your broke *** home.  Have u heard of it? Its great. You dont have to tip ANYONE!

  7. i wish there was a movement to prevent it. it gripes my butt to no end to have 15% automatically included in my bill. plus your expected to leave an additional tip on the table. I hate also if your bill is say 7.00 and you give them a ten, they ask if i want any change back. TIPS means to insure proper service. if its given automatically. wheres the extra service? why is my coffee cup always empty? my family came to visit me one year. we all went out to breaskfast. there was 8 of us sitting at 2 tables. we had 1 waitress. i paid the bill myself. it was about 35.00. i left a 20 on the table for a tip. the waitress picks up the 20 and comes running up to me and says, ma'am you accidently left a 20 bill on the table, i said no dear, thats for you. thank you for doing a great job. she cried and keep saying, you have no idea what this means to me thank you thank you, you just have no idea. she was so grateful and appreciative. i bet from that day forward, even if she didnt get another tip that big, she busts her but. and thats how it should be. if your gonna work for tips, then by GOD earn it. people will be generous if given good reason to be.

  8. i have no problems with tipping. i do think that wait people should be paid more, but i also think that minimum wage should also be higher.

if wait people were paid higher wages, we as patrons would have to pay more. i as a rule tip 20% on top of the tax. if service is superior i tip 25%, if service is very poor i tip 10%.

  9. You can't stop it and it is not a custom it is the way the service system works, e.g., cab drivers, pizza delivery, hair dressers barbers, etc. People who dislike tipping need to cook at home or go to a fast food place.

  10. I wish they would too.  But it isn't, so I tip however much I feel I should depending on the service I get.

  11. i agree with you.  food prices are high enough!  at the very least it should be scaled back to 10% (before tax).

  12. I am so there! Because the whole thing stinks anyhow! THAT IS YOUR JOB! Why should I give extra money for someone to DO THEIR JOB? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever! There is a place by me that you pay ahead of time and then they have numbers for all tables and people bring your food, however they don't keep coming back. It's great because once you give me the chow, I don't want you hovering over me. And then I don't have to pay the stupid tip!You have to pay a little more up front, but it works out better in the long run.

  13. Waiters and waitresses DON'T get paid minimum wage for the simple reason that they are supposed to make up the difference by getting tips!  Get the facts; obviously you've never been a waiter or waitress because if you had been you'd know the answer to your question!

  14. no do you think that tipping should be spread to morre service people, it gives immediate rating of performance. and encourages better treatment of customers.

  15. The majority of servers rely heavily on tips to make up a living wage.

I tip my servers for their attendance to my needs, and their enthusiastic goal of making my night out a pleasant and memorable one.

I do not intend to stop this practice.

  16. "why should i give extra money for someone doing their job?"

because we only get roughly TWO dollars an hour. not $50/hr like doctors or anything else like that. meaning, we DON'T really get a paycheck from our restaurants. so the money that is given to us is the MAJORITY of our income... it's not "extra". it's not like we could live off of that two dollars per hour.

if you can't afford to pay the bill, DO NOT even step foot into a restaurant. the tip is a part of the bill, just as much as the tax is.

  17. I disagree. I think wait persons should be tipped for good service and even though I do not have a big income I tip 20% for good service. No one can survive on minimum or less which is what they get paid. Would you prefer they get

paid a living wage and you pay twice as much for your meal?

You can't have it both ways.

  18. Obviously you DON'T work in the service industry even though you say you do.  I waited tables for years and made well below minimum wage.  Tips keep people in the service industry.  No problems with someone making rent in one night - it shows they give fantastic service.

  19. Excuse me? I'm a waitress and I get paid 2.83 an hour (depends on what state you work in but all waiting wages are similar). If I don't make tips I don't HAVE a place to live! Plus most places have to do tipsharing with bussers/hostesses/bartenders so some people don't even get to take all their money home. Who are you to say what we should make and why is it our fault that you make minimum wage? Get a better job and tip properly!

Edit: Sorry just reread the question and found something I missed. I wanna know what restaurant YOU work at that pays you minimum wage if you don't make a lot of tips. I know a lot of people who have waited tables, and I myself do, and I've NEVER heard of that. And you say "since when did waiting tables become a job one should take home the rent money in one night?" Let me just tell you something. Waiting tables hasn't changed in about a hundred years. Get a clue.

  20. I was raised to believe if you can't or won't tip for service, don't go, stay home and serve yourself.

Wait staff don't make their rent money in just one night, hard to do when they get paid below min. wage, they need the tips or they wouldn't be working in that industry.

If everyone was cheap, there would be no one to wait tables.

  21. I live in California.  Servers here are legally paid at least the minimum wage.  In states like New York, servers are legally exempt from minimum wage laws, and often get paid less than $3/hour.  Many servers also have to split their tips with other employees, and sometimes even the owners!

I have never been a server but appreciate what a hard job it is to be a good one.  I also believe that people who work hard, are good at their jobs, and provide friendly and courteous service should make more than those who don't.  I can't control what a restaurant pays a server, but I can (and do) certainly make sure that I express my appreciation for good service.  That INCLUDES tipping appropriately.

  22. Uh...please don't go out to eat anymore.  Drive-through is all you need, buddy!

Most people who wait tables rely on tips for the majority of their income....

what kind of question is this?

PS-if you don't like tipping, go to Europe.  It's usually included in your bill.
