Does anyone know of some well-priced railway passes for a trip to England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland?

I am doing a Jane Austen tour with another person and we are trying to find reasonably priced passes for 3-4 weeks. We wanted unlimited use. Does anyone have any links that they can send me? I am 28 and my travelling buddy is 22 if age makes a difference. Thank you in advance.

  1. There are national Britrail passes that you have to buy before coming to the UK, or once you get here you could buy a regional pass. I think the "Freedom of the North East 7 day Rover" is your best bet for Wuthering Heightsish stuff!

National passes are sold in the UK too but at much higher prices than Britrail.

Youth fares are only valid til you turn 26 (and you need a £24 student railcard), but if you can get an ISIC student card then you still qualify. It gives 1/3 off most fares sold in the UK, including rover passes. You don't need it to use Britrail, but for that you'd pay the adult price.

If you can tie yourselves down to specific trains and book in advance, it will save you a lot of cash. Advance intercity fares on some routes go as low as £2.50 with a student railcard. Book the tickets online with Raileasy (other booking sites don't take foreign cards), pick them up from a Fasticket machine in a station, and get your railcards from the ticket office.

Have a look at Seat61.com for more info, it's a great site for planning train trips all over the world.

  2. Try this site:

    http://www.raileurope.com/us/index.htm

There may be other companies out there offering the same thing so do some google searching and research before you decide to buy.

    Have fun!
