  1. Get some heavy duty thermal drapes and be sure to keep your drapes closed during daylight hours, especially on the west and south sides of your place.

It may make the house dark, but it will be cooler.  I also use my floor and ceiling fans to keep the air moving.

  2. curtins.....

  3. Evaporative window coolers like a swamp cooler is what the call them here they work great run cheap but don't work so well in humid areas. They also make thermal curtains

  4. Most hardware stores sell a 3-M product that you install over your window opening, then heat it with a hair dryer to remove wrinkles. It is an excellent insulator, and does not restrict your view.

  5. cover windows with heavy dark colored curtains. This will be nearly as effective as it holds out the sun, and hence the heat. Or, black trashbags can be taped over the windows. Either way, it should help.

  6. Maybe mini-blinds in silver or gold . They'll reflect heat outward if they're closed, and they're 'decorative'. Heavy curtains in front of them would help too.

  7. I'm feeling your pain here in Texas. We are flat out moving because out electric bill is so high and we picked a bad spot in our current complex with no shade on the second floor with a giant westward facing window. Thick curtains really are your best bet. When the sun is at it's hottest make sure all the blinds are closed. It's most important to cover your windows that face the west.
