What's your definition of inexpensive?  It all really depends on where you want to go, for how long, and other things like shore excursions.

Booking early is a good way to get what you want (inside cabin, off-season, etc.).  Another way, depending on your flexibility, is to wait till the last minute.  You can get last minute deals with the cruises trying to fill all vacant rooms due to their location (some rooms are small, above the engines or disco's, etc) or due to last minute cancellations.

Check out the respective Cruise line's web sites or contact a travel agent.

we sail on Carnival one it is the best deal and it has so much to offer, also travailing as a family it has the largest staterooms too,

the cheapest way to go on a cruise is book early,

pick the right time of year, Sept -Dec has the lowest prices,

and be careful about the excursions, a lot of the tours can be cheaper after you get to the port, the only ones I would book from the line are the ones where time is a concern, such as the Mayan ruins in Mexico where you have to take a bus to get to them and back.

Call Carnival direct.  The cheapest times to cruise are Sept and the beginning of Dec.  They will give you the cheapest price by cutting out the middle man.  We have sailed with them several times, and nobody could beat the price that they gave me, and I have checked it out every time.

I even checked at booktickets4less.com for my Sept cruise, and they were 50 dollars higher than Carnival's page.
