  1. "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" is a book written by Walter Rodney in which he portrays the view that Africa was deliberately exploited and underdeveloped by European colonial regimes.

Rodney argues that a combination of power politics and economic exploitation of Africa by Europeans led to the poor state of African political and economic development evident in the late 20th Century.

  2. Jarrod Diamond in his book "Guns Germs and Steel" had some interesting theories about why colonialism wasn't as successful in equatorial Africa.  Basically, Southern Africa had a climate similar to that of Europeans.  As they moved north, their habits and livestock no longer gave them an advantage over the indigenous people.
