Does anyone know the amount ot time The Mallard did 126mph for?

  1. Probably only a few seconds. It did 126mph for a 1/4 of a mile, so what would that be 5 - 6 seconds at the most.

    I drive trains at 110 and have friends that drive at 125, and it's fast, so for a steam engine, it must have been sheer skill or madness to get 126mph. Something to be proud of whatever.


  2. Nobody knows - but it was 306 Yards - long enough for the record to be made in the Dyanometer coach.

  5. It was on a long downhill stretch and it broke the engine (it was out of service for repairs for a long while afterwards)

    The Current 'Mallard' electric trains on the route do the same speed up the hill (and if cab signalling was rolled out they'd do 140mph up it!)
