I am contemplating adding a sub as well as an amp for my car. I have a kenwood head unit, and aftermarket kicker speakers. However, I do not know how strong my stock alternator is. With the RMS totaling 490 watts, I am not sure if my 05 corolla can handle it or if I would need to upgrade the battery/alt. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  1. any stock alternator could handle 490 watts RMS without any additional equipment. the real issues with some cars start around 700-800 and most cars fall apart with stock electrical around 1000-1100 watts. If for some unknown reason you do have issues, it would be because your battery or alternator are on thier last leg, and likely need replaced, but replacing with a new OEM should be fine. If you really want to do something extra, then the big 3 is the best first step, cost about 40 bucks for some 4 ga wire, ADD it and your system will run more effieciently.

But i honestly think you will be A - O - K as you are.

So no worries. have fun, and happy poundin.

  2. right on the stock wiring, maybe when its time for a new battery (i would do it now after 3 years) use a battery with a good reserve capacity will help with the current draw, also right about good quality wire, 4 gauge minimum, and use a fuse JUST for each amp and as close to the battery as possible (or as close to your power source as possible, but that should be the battery).....
