I`ve been interested in the game for quite a while and I`m also interested if there is a website where I can learn the basics of the RPG through a game?

  1. My links below gives really basic overview.

The core rule in DnD, both 3.5 and 4, is actually very simple.  Whenever you the outcome of an action can be in doubt (hitting a monster, dodging a spell, climbing a wall) you make a roll.  The roll itself is simple in concept: roll at twenty-sided die (d20), add any bonuses, subtract any penalties, then compare the number to the difficulty the dungeon master (DM) has or assigns.  If you your roll is the same or better, you succeed; worse, and you fail.

The complexity in DnD lies in determining what those bonuses are and figuring out exactly what you can do.

As for getting a game on, try your local game shop, or barring that http://www.wizards.com  there are extensive forums there of people wanting games and or players.

  2. The 'complete' rules are pretty big!  However, they aren't nearly as intimidating as they might look.  The new D&D 4th edition Player's Handbook contains the essential rules to play the game.  However, the actual part of the book with the 'rules' of the game is pretty small - the vast bulk of the book is all the different special abilities characters have.

The best way to learn D&D is to play it.  A good group will be happy to teach new players as you go.  You shouldn't need any supplies to start beyond a friendly attitude.  If you like the game, you'll probably want a Players' Handbook and some dice.

If you go to the Wizard of the Coast forums - www.wizards.com/dnd, they have a board for locating groups and players in different areas.  They also have a chat room where they have weekly intro games...however, the chat has been down at the moment for technical problems, and who knows when or if they will get it back.

Good luck and have fun gaming!
