  1. Bilbo is a hobbit, and by nature he is not adventurous in the least. However, when a group of dwarves arrive at his house, Bilbo is asked to travel across Middle Earth to help them. The difficulty is his cowardice. He fears what's out there, and wants nothing more than to stay in the Shire. His cowerdice follows him throughout the story, and in several instances he must conquer it.

  2. Throughout the book, Bilbo confronts his same-s*x romantic feelings, eventually giving into his need for dirty stinky man love.  He abandoned the rules his society and the adopted a new "fabulous" lifestyle.

The Dwarves wanted him and he wanted the dwarves... but the other hobbits in the shire would look down on him for going with the strange masculine creatures.  All of the other hobbits in the shire liked Bilbo, and they turned a blind eye to his "tendencies".  The fact that he was eleventy something and had never married was whispered about, but never openly discussed.  Similarly, whenever he was having tea with the wizard, the other hobbits pretended not to notice... occasionally he would be a little too flaming and they'd chastise him a little, but they knew what he knew - he was a homo hobbit and there was no stopping him.
